모 사이트 회원들이 자신들의 주장과 이익에 배치되는 대자보를 멋대로 훼손한 후 그것을 '대자보를 훼손할 자유'라고 합리화하였다는 어처구니 없는 뉴스를 보고, 천조국(...) 대통령의 연설 내용 중 일부를 살짝 인용해봅니다. 물론 강조 표시는 제가 했습니다.

개인적으로 '안녕들 하십니까' 대자보의 논리에 일부 공감하지만 100% 찬성하지는 않습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그 대자보를 붙이는 행위는 지지합니다. 민주주의라는 것은 원래부터 다양한 의견이 서로 충돌하며 해결책을 모색하도록 설계된 체제이기 때문입니다.

당연한 것이지만 이성과 논리의 지배를 받는 자유민주주의 사회에서, 타인의 대자보를 훼손하는 것은 자신의 의사를 표현하는 행위가 아니라, 상대방의 발언을 틀어 막는 행위입니다. 상대방과 다른 의견을 가지고 있다면, 그 옆에 반박하는 대자보를 붙이는 것이 옳습니다.

민주주의 사회 또한 일종의 법정이고, 이 법정은 '당사자주의(adversarial system)'를 기반으로 합니다. 양 당사자가 팽팽하게 대립각을 세우면, 지켜보던 사회 구성원들이 재판관으로서 한 쪽의 손을 들어주는 것입니다. 감정과 아집이 아닌, 냉혹할 정도로 차가운 이성과 논리로 서로를 반박하도록 만들어진 체계에서, 상대방의 입을 틀어막는 것은 결코 용납되어서는 안되는 행위입니다.

어쨌든 잡소리는 집어치우고 천조국 대통령님 말씀이나 살짝 소개하겠습니다.

...Will we live free or in chains?  Under governments that uphold our universal rights, or regimes that suppress them?  In open societies that respect the sanctity of the individual and our free will, or in closed societies that suffocate the soul?

…And because courageous crowds climbed atop that wall, because corrupt dictatorships gave way to new democracies, because millions across this continent now breathe the fresh air of freedom, we can say, here in Berlin, here in Europe -

our values won. 

Openness won.

Tolerance won.

And freedom won here in Berlin...

…Our values call upon us to care about

the lives of people we will never meet…

…let’s remember that peace with justice depends on our ability to sustain both the security of our societies and the openness that defines them.  Threats to freedom don’t merely come from the outside.  They can emerge from within --

from our own fears,

from the disengagement of our citizens…

…But we must accept the challenge that all of us in democratic governments face:  to listen to the voices who disagree with us;

to have an open debate about how we use our powers

and how we must constrain them; and

to always remember that

government exists to serve the power of the individual,

and not the other way around.

That’s what makes us who we are,

and that’s what makes us different

from those on the other side of the wall…
