Does the HTC HD2 have an FM transmitter?

There is a pretty active thread going on on XDA-Developers started by hoss_n2 discussing the possibility of the HTC HD2 having a FM Transmitter built into its WIFI chip, and the tantalizing suggestion this may be activated.

The theory is rooted in the belief the WIFI chip in the HD2 is actually the Broadcom BCM4329, which is a WIFI N-capable chip (just like the HD2) and therefore also capable of being a FM Transmitter also.

Interestingly the circuit diagram shows the Broadcom chip using the same hardware for transmitting as receiving, including the antenna, suggesting all that is needed to activate this latent feature is the right software.

Of course veteran Windows Mobile users will have much experience with having devices with under-utilized hardware, and some (much less) experience with that hardware being unlocked. Examples include the GPS chips on some devices, the FM radios on others, and the hardware graphics acceleration on a few more. Some devices have even been found with VGA screens posing as QVGA.

Follow this thread for the latest developments in in this matter, and I am sure the posters would love the help of a good hardware hacker also.

This would be very cool. While i don't need it currently I'm sure i would find uses for this if it was enabled.

this would be pretty cool. it would really be nice to not connect my phone in the car, just send my songs through the fm transmitter and all is well. I could have my phone in my pocket if I wanted to, no need to connect 3.5mm jack.

It would be pretty cool, sure.... as would 720p video recording and we're still waiting for that, that was also supposed to be a straightforward software issue.

There's a guy told me that HD2 has a FM receiver, so you can listen to FM without plug the headphone, but the software currently does not support it. Hope someone at xda could unlock it.

Huh? This article is about an FM transmitter, meaning you can broadcast the audio from your device over FM, sort of like those thing to 'connect' your iPod to your car (before all new cars had AUX inputs).

Someone probably can disable the headphone requirement for the FM radio on the HD2, but once you get into the radio app you would hear absolutely nothing because the wire from the headphone is needed as an antenna to get audio. I know the original Omnia had a registry setting which you could switch and load up the FM radio without plugging in the headphones, but all you would hear was static.

Why would this be useful for anything except terrble sound quality in your car? Either do it right with a 3.5mm hookup or a BT hookup, or don't. The last thing I'd expect from this crowd is to use the bottom of the totem pole FM transmitter, you guys are all smarter than that.
So break out the radioshack audio equipment and get to hacking a line-in or BT hookup into your car, and stop waisting time with this crap!

When you buy HTC/Qualcomm, it's so typical to never really getting all you paid for. But then again, the FM has been entirely useless (static) without a headset in most of these devices, and who runs around with a headset attached these days?

When I happen to be listening to the radio, I mostly do it with a headset. Since bluetooth is crap generally, I use a wired one, and then I can get radio.

The same "you never get what you pay for" applies to everything. First gen iPhones had a 3G chipset (same as the one in the 3GS) but you didn't get that, the Omnia II have FPUs which aren't used...

Hardware always does more than it's enabled to do, because you can sell some more in the future.

Fortunately the new chip from broadcom features BT v3.0+ HS, that means 24Mbps over BT, 10 times the normal data rate of v2.1 EDR
